What is the ECML?
The Essex County Math League (ECML) competition is a middle/high school mathematics contest comprising of 6 subject areas (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Advanced Math, Calculus, and Statistics). The contest is open to all students in Essex County, NJ. The questions are designed to challenge the students currently enrolled in the specific subject. Held annually at Caldwell University, it is a great day for students to demonstrate their math skills and meet other students from the different districts in Essex County.

Guidelines for the Contest
What to bring, what to expect, and what to know about the actual contest

All participating schools need to read these guidelines and convey this information to the participating students.
- Students may use any calculator that follows the following guidelines:
- NO TI-89, TI-Inspire, or the like (aka, no CAS calculators).
- NO calculator that has a QWERTY keyboard, laptop, or cell phone calculator.
- Any student found using an unapproved calculator during the contest will have their score disqualified.
- Students need to bring #2 pencils. The test is scored using Scantron and pencils will not be provided.
- Each school may bring AT MOST five students at each level: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Advanced Math (Pre-Calculus), Calculus, and Statistics. Every student must be currently enrolled in the class in order to compete.
- The tests for Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Statistics have 20 questions each. The tests for Advanced Math (Pre-Calculus) and Calculus have 15 questions each.
- Each contest will be 50 minutes long.
- During the test, students will be seated with one student at each table taking each subject area test.
- Individual scoring is the “number correct.” There is no penalty for incorrect answers.
- The team score is the sum of the top three individual scores. The school score is the sum of the top FOUR team scores out of the six subject areas.
- There will be a meeting of advisors after the contest begins. Please have at least one other person with you to help proctor the contest.
- Light refreshments will be provided by Caldwell University. No lunch will be sold. Please have students bring a bag lunch if they will not be eating upon their return to school. Refreshments will be made available after the students complete the contest.
- Masks are optional on the day of the competition.
